Day 32 -- Come On! I Mean Really!

IT IS JUNE for crying in the cruddy bucket! What is with this rain?!? Usually by this time our lawn is mostly dead. Now it's like the Amazon Rainforest. Scott, I know...This is an effect of She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Scott has a relative that is able to manipulate the weather. I doubted her power just before the flood and look what happened. I will not make the same mistake again. Neither, it seems, will DAYT. They sent some guys by this morning and called this afternoon to make sure we were still dry. I'm hoping it will let up enough this week for them to get the rest of the second floor closed in.

I was able to snap a few cute shot's of Izzypop and her umbrella.

Day 31 -- 1 Month Recap

Well, it's been one month since DAYT officially started working on the house. Since then they have demolished the old roof, poured concrete footings and a bond beam, framed in most of the exterior upper floor, framed in both stairways, set both main beams, and got the roof on back half of the house. They also drywalled the ceilings on the main level and removed all the crown moulding, baseboards, and hardwood floors after the flood.

Pretty dang good for one month, I'd say. Keep up the good work!

Day 30 -- The Bridge

Brian walked upstairs today and said "I feel like I'm on the bridge!". We're not talking Golden Gate or Brooklyn. We're talking The Bridge. And if you've been living on the other side of a Cardassian moon and still don't know what I'm talking about: Star Trek...The Bridge...On the Enterprise. I guess that makes me Number One. Or maybe Deanna Troi....Ooh! Can I be Uhura?

In other news, they finished putting up the rafters, plywood and tar paper on the back half of the house today, so we should stay mostly dry if it rains. The whole front of the house is still open, so there's still potential for rain damage, but they've been keeping the tarps pretty secure since "the incident".

I can't wait until they start framing out the front so we can get a better idea of what it will look like.

Uhura out.

Day 29 -- Beam Me Up

We finally got the beams in today! The guys showed up at 6 this morning, the crane was here at 8 and they were done putting the beams in place by 9. Then they stayed until 8 at night putting rafters in. They goal is to have the back half of the house tarpapered by tomorrow. It would be great to have a semi-roof by this weekend, because it's supposed to rain all next week.

The north/south steel beam has 6 other beams coming into it at the center.

Here's the main east/west beam hooked up to the steel beam.

Here are a couple shots of the rafters.

Day 28 -- Badger...Badger...Badger

Okay, for those of you who don't get the reference in the title of this post (Puckett, you may be the only one who does): Our framer's company is Badger Construction. Any time I hear or type "Badger", I can't help but think "Badger...Badger....Badger". Click on the link and you'll see why. Anyway, James and his guys from Badger...Badger...Badger Construction did an awesome job (as usual) knocking out all three staircases today, plus the new expanded landing at the back door. We are continually impressed by their service and how hard they work.

It is soooo cool to be able to walk upstairs to our new addition and to be able to start seeing where everything will be. I can already tell I am going to love the new staircase going upstairs as well as the mudroom. I didn't quite know what to do with myself when I walked in the door and didn't feel like I was about to fall down the stairs. We're also really excited about the new arrangement of the stairs downstairs. Moving them 90 degrees will allow us to create a good sized storage room where the toy room used to be. I hated coming down the stairs and having to walk through a multitude of junk just to get to the rest of the basement. This new configuration is going to be a much better use of the space.

Prominent enough for you James? Mushroom...Mushroom........SNAKE!

Day 27 -- No Stairway! Denied!

We have no stairs. They took out both the stairs to the basement as well as the stairs from the main floor to the back door landing. Brian just about killed himself and the dog trying to get her downstairs. He has two big claw marks in his forehead as a result of the ordeal. He's mad now, but I'm hoping he can laugh about this later.

Another project they had today was to demo the entire wall that used to be between our bedroom and the hallway. This will eventually be an open staircase up to the second level. They also removed all the hardwood floors on the main level. I also had to take a picture of the office. I don't think I realized how awful it looks until today. I can't wait until the main floor is put back together.

Here's a before and after floor plan for the main level so you can get a better idea of what we're doing. Basically, we're moving the stairs a full 90 degrees going downstairs plus pushing back the landing stairs back a couple feet to make room for a small mudroom sort of space.
No beam today, so no roof. Rained hard again, no leaks. They're hoping to get the beam in tomorrow afternoon.

Day 26 -- New Old Ceilings (Part 2)

Not a whole lot worth blogging about today. They taped and mudded the front room, dining room and office. Other than that, there was a little cleaning up, but not much else. We're waiting on the custom steel beam for the roof. They're hoping to get it tomorrow and be able to close us in. It's currently raining pretty hard out there, but it seems that the big blue tarp is doing its job. We went up there to check it out and didn't see any leaks. The next 3 days are supposed to be rainy, so I hope it can hold out.
